If you are interested in adding a furry, four-legged friend into your life, consider adopting from a local shelter.
Shelters around the country house thousands of homeless cats and dogs, all looking for a good home. From purebreeds
to mutts, cats to dogs, young and old - shelters offer a wide variety of choices.
Before adopting a dog however, there are many things that should be considered to ensure that your new dog will be a
perfect fit in the family. First, consider what the ideal size of the dog should be that would work with your household.
Large dogs generally don't work well living in small and cramped apartments.
Also, consider the amount of care that is required for the different breeds of dogs. Some dogs have short hair
and don't require much grooming. However, many dogs need to be brushed daily. In addition, find out how much each
type of dog sheds. Short-haired dogs tend to shed less but it is important to find out how much work you are setting
yourself up for in taking care of your new dog.
If you are considering to adopt a puppy, realize that they will need as much attention and care as that of a young child.
The dogs will need to be housetrained and taught basic commands such as 'sit' and 'stay.' However, this doesn't go just
for puppies. Some older dogs are still not trained well on housetraining and other commands so it is important to know
that much time and effort will be needed into training your new pet.
